Hastings Father Discusses Joe Teirab’s History of Cutting Plea Deals with Violent Offenders, Fentanyl Dealers in Latest Angie Craig Ad

Despite touting himself as a “tough-on-crime” prosecutor during his run for Congress, Teirab often used his prosecutorial discretion to offer plea deals to individuals charged with dealing fentanyl and violent crimes

EAGAN, MN – Today, the Angie Craig for Congress campaign released their latest ad of the cycle, “I Know,” highlighting the plea deals Joe Teirab cut with violent repeat offenders, fentanyl dealers and child abusers during his time as a prosecutor.

Tom, a father from Hastings, starts out by sharing how his family has been impacted by the fentanyl epidemic. Tom lost his son, Devin, to an accidental fentanyl poisoning. Devin was just 19 years old when he purchased what he thought was a Percocet on Snapchat – the pill turned out to be pure fentanyl.

Tom dives into Teirab’s prosecutorial record – detailing a case in which Teirab cut a plea deal with an individual charged with multiple felony drug counts. After Teirab cut that deal, the same individual was once again arrested on charges related to dealing fentanyl.

He also discusses Teirab’s involvement with cases in which child abusers got little or no jail time. As a prosecutor, he helped cut deals with individuals charged with assaulting young children – allowing them to evade prison time.

“As a prosecutor, Joe Teirab had the opportunity to hold criminals accountable to the fullest extent of the law – but instead, he chose to cut plea deals with violent offenders and fentanyl dealers. That’s not working to keep Minnesotans safe – and families like Tom’s deserve better,” said Rep. Craig.
