Insurance News Net: Rep. Craig Bill to Lower Health Costs to be Voted on Next Week

6/25/2020

Rep. Angela Craig, D-Minnesota, issued the following news release:

Congresswoman Angie Craig joined Speaker Nancy Pelosi to unveil her Patient Protection and Affordable Care Enhancement Act, which includes Rep. Craig’s bipartisan legislation to lower health insurance premiums for folks in the individual marketplace.

Rep. Craig’s bill, the bipartisan State Health Care Premium Reduction Act, addresses one of the biggest and most immediate concerns facing hardworking American families right now: affordable health care. This bill would encourage states to create their own state-based marketplaces, which would cover the costliest medical claims and lower health insurance premiums for people across the country. Rep. Craig introduced the State Health Care Premium Reduction Act in February of 2019 and the bill passed out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in April 2019.

“The number one issue I talk about with hardworking families across Minnesota’s Second Congressional District is the skyrocketing cost of health care. Right now, too many families are paying too much for their health insurance or have been priced out of the market,” said Rep. Craig. “These conversations drive my work, and they are why I’ve been fighting to lower health care costs since my first day in office. I’m proud to have my bipartisan bill included in this comprehensive package to lower premiums and out of pocket health care costs for more Americans.”

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Enhancement Act, unveiled today aims to:

* Lower Americans’ health coverage costs

* Negotiate lower prescription drug prices

* Expand coverage and push hold-out states to adopt Medicaid expansion

* Combat disparities in health coverage faced by communities of color

* Crack down on junk plans and strengthens protections for people with preexisting conditions
